What a Birkin Is Worth by Size

These are the bands we pay today, before we have seen your bag. Every row uses the same specification, so the only thing changing is the size. Your own Birkin lands higher or lower once leather, colour, hardware and condition are applied, and the sections below show by how much. Why a Smaller Birkin Is Worth More

It runs against instinct, because a bigger bag uses more leather and costs more new. On the resale market it works the other way. On our figures a Birkin 25 is worth about 18 per cent more than a Birkin 30, and about 53 per cent more than a Birkin 40. The step from 30 down to 35 is smaller, about 16 per cent.

The auction market shows the same pattern. Sotheby's reports leather Birkin 25s selling for roughly $20,000 to $40,000, against roughly $10,000 to $30,000 for a leather Birkin 30. How Condition Changes a Birkin's Value

After size and leather, condition moves a Birkin most. Going from excellent to good takes 15% off in our model, and fair takes 32% off. Store fresh, unworn with the plastic still on the hardware, adds 15%. Here is how that plays out size by size:

The details that decide which column your Birkin falls into:

• Corners. The four base corners wear first. Rubbed or scuffed corners are the most common reason a bag grades good rather than excellent.
• Handles. Darkening from hand contact, creasing or a loss of shape at the top of the handles.
• Hardware. Scratches on the turnlock, clochette and feet. Polished-out hardware is worth mentioning up front.
• Shape. A Birkin stored without its stuffing can slump. Leather that has lost its structure costs more than a mark does.
• Interior. Ink, make-up and smells from smoke or perfume show up the moment the flap is opened.

How Leather Changes a Birkin's Value

Togo and Epsom are the benchmark leathers for a Birkin and price close together. Chevre and Barenia pay a little more. Exotics are a different market: ostrich adds +35% in our model, lizard +80% and crocodile or alligator +120%. Colour and Hardware

Colour matters more than hardware. Noir, Gold and Etoupe always have buyers, so they are our baseline. A special order, marked by a small horseshoe stamp beside the date stamp, pays more; bright seasonal colours pay less unless the colour itself is rare. Hardware moves the figure by a few per cent at most.

What a Buyer Pays vs What a Birkin Lists For

The prices you see on resale sites are asking prices, and a Birkin's asking price is usually well above what any buyer will pay a private seller. That is not a trick. The listing has to cover the dealer's margin, authentication, photography, VAT on the margin, the risk of a return and the months a bag can sit before it sells. Many listings are also cut before they sell.

Sotheby's says a store-fresh leather Birkin sells for almost three times its original retail price, around $30,000 for a Birkin 25 or 30, and that visible wear can take 30 per cent or more off. It also reported Sellier Birkins, stitched on the outside, averaging close to $28,000 at auction in 2022, about 70 per cent above the Retourne average. Treat those as the top of the market in dollars, not a figure for your bag. Headline records are further removed still: Jane Birkin's own original Birkin sold at Sotheby's in 2025 for about $10.1 million.

What reaches you depends on how you sell. Consignment commission typically runs 20 to 40 per cent, and the money arrives only when the bag sells.
